Picture shows calls to protect the Lacandon Jungle
Contrasting with images that show the beauty and destruction that has been one of the richest forests of the world, was inaugurated this afternoon the "Xibalba, the lost dreams of the Lacandon Jungle," in Gallery Outdoor Rejas de Chapultepec.
The exhibition, held in the International Year of the Earth declared by UNESCO, is made up of 59 large-format photographs and a series of texts that warn about the destruction of the rainforest and with it the Mayan culture that flourished there. The images are composed by John Mack and the texts of the German writer Susanne Stein.
Prior to the inauguration, the researcher emeritus at the Institute of Ecology at UNAM, Jose Sarukhan, gave an overview of the destruction that had prevailed in the humid tropical forests of Mexico.
The specialist said he regretted the fact that although Mexico has one of the greatest wealth in biodiversity, is also having one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, especially in the tropics.
Exemplified than in the 80s, the Lacandon jungle near an area covering 1.5 million hectares but only 20 years after covering only some 330 thousand hectares, less than a quarter original, belonging to the constantly besieged Reserve the Montes Azules Biosphere.
"La Selva Lacandona reservoir is like no other in our country of biodiversity. There are in it for about two thousand 500 species of plants, mostly related to the biogeographic region of the Amazon, where they originate. There have been some 800 species of butterflies, representing 45 percent of all known in Mexico, more than a quarter of all known species of mammals Mexicans living in the Lacandon.
And he added: "More than 300 species of birds cross the space between the forest, which corresponds to one third of the known for the country, and there are nearly a thousand recorded species of reptiles and amphibians."
In this way, Jose Sarukhan called to put emphasis on the conservation of natural resources, or as they are called now, renewable natural capital, because they are the lifeblood of any society.
During his speech, Secretary of Culture of the Federal District, Elena Cepeda, felt that the exhibition seeks to awaken the conscience or affirm that the effort to survive on the planet belongs to everyone and still be done.
The exhibition "Xibalba, the lost dreams of the Lacandon Jungle" will be in Las Rejas de Chapultepec until October 19 and then will be mounted on the open-air gallery of the National Polytechnic Institute, the Public Plaza of the Iztapalapa Delegation and the Center Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav).
