Guillermo Kahlo exhibit photographic essay on identity
Convinced that a photo shoot is a shrine to remove the masks daily, the Mexican photographer Guillermo Kahlo explores the theme of identity, from 40 works out at the Center of Contemporary Mexico, from Sept. 5 to Oct. 6.
The exhibition, organized within the framework of Fotoseptiembre 2007, is also a visual tribute to Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), which includes a series of photographs of the six dresses recently found in a bathroom sealed for more than 50 years in the Blue House of Coyoacan.
For the artist, at work portrait, the artist feels, the camera captures both the human being to the idea that he has of himself, thus turning to photography in a container of time, where it is the past, present and the future.
The identity, he added in statements broadcast today, it's something serious, an obsession that through the portrait photography merges two images of mysterious way disímbolas and fundamental human being: you want to convey and that it actually is.
Even the paper you want to represent every person in this life speaks volumes about their essence and their psychology, as they are able to develop their identity through a simple picture.
Therefore, Kahlo found that this new series could be defined as an exploration of how identity affects human relationships, both with their presence and with their absence.
He recalled that exists in society pressure to turn people into characters or carriers of a second skin, but clarified that he is among his personal codes do not define or prosecute anyone for what it has, or the environment that surrounds it, but on the contrary, from the absence of these elements.
Perhaps that is why Kahlo is not looking so attractive and beauty in society as this, it believes, leads to many forms of pain and frustration.
"In this exhibition there are beautiful faces, but there are also some very interesting characters, destitute, people with certain mental illnesses that they propose in their faces and eyes bright. I think part of the beauty is also in the emotions that manages to awaken a human being with his mere presence "he said.
The exhibition also is a series formed by the portraits of the six dresses that were found in the bathroom seal that belonged to Frida Kahlo, some of them models that appear in his most famous works.
For the exhibition took such parts as a basis for making its own interpretation of their ancestors.
"The costumes of Frida reflect a woman who had a particular taste for the refined and yet so spontaneous. It strikes me how the garments seem to have a voice and talk about their essence, someone for whom the aesthetic was a fundamental element of life, "he said.
"It seems to me that this is linked to a ritual deeply linked to identity, their beliefs and pride for his nation," said Kahlo.
The images on gastronomy is another of his interests in visual level, since the kitchen is one of the most important cultural events in the country, in addition to their aesthetic qualities and acquire the broadcast Seal identatario of their peoples.
The photographs are presented in this category are made based on the concepts gourmet chef of the Mexican Martha Ortiz, because it believes that the kitchen Guillermo charge, through the experts, and even artistic qualities of painting, giving a timeless dimension and universality to each dish.
All images have a constant search for the qualities of the vacuum in the picture, as well as the potentiation of the concept of absence.
That, under which the artist believes that photography is for a man seeking his identity; a window, an oracle, a glance through the lock that shows the figures that are described throughout the ages.
