The Leeward is a region defined by certain common cultural elements, located in what is now southern Veracruz, part of Oaxaca and Tabasco.

The different historical processes in that region have happened (such as the development in that region of the Olmec culture, or the strong presence and influence during the Afro-Caribbean colony), have distinctive cultural elements in shaping the region, and as the son jarocho their fandangos, the burning of years old; cuisine based on tubers; myths chaneques and the god of corn and livestock economy.

To strengthen and disseminate the culture and identities in that region, various state and federal institutions have organized the Leeward Photography Contest.

In the broadcast that this year will be awarded, winners in the latter two categories are members of the collective research Chiku Tun, who have submitted pictures related to a particular subregion of the Leeward: the Sierra de Santa Marta, jungle and mountain region located in Veracruz , South of the Tuxtlas, inhabited by Nahua indigenous and Popoluca.

The Chiku Tun group is made up of students and graduates of the University of Veracruz, who have conducted research work and photographic record in this area with the ultimate aim of forming an eco-museum in the community Popoluca Stone Labrada, in a joint work with the population there.

The images from the series winner in the category black and white, entitled "Daily life and tradition of the Zoque-Popoluca," showing images of domestic tasks, people, economy and the holidays are typical of this ethnic group.

The authors of the photographs that make up the series are Quetzalli Malagón Pimentel, Luis Alberto Mendoza Esquivel and German Romero Martinez.

The series winner in the category of color is entitled "Living Heritage of the Sierra de Santa Marta," and is composed of pictures of Jenny Perez Cardenas, Alberto Cordova Ortiz, Luis Alberto Mendoza, Demian Maciel Ortiz and German Romero.
