Create the "Oscar" of photography


It was announced today in London the first edition of the World Photography Awards, a competition that aims to be for the photograph, which is the Oscar for the film. Has eleven categories and winners will be announced the images April 24, 2008, in Cannes.

Snapshots of professionals and amateurs around the world will compete next year in the first edition of the International World Photography Awards, which purports to be, as explained today its organizers, the "Oscar" of photography.

A jury composed of eleven photographers from the size of Tom Stoddart, Mary Ellen Mark Elliott Erwitt award or eleven snapshots received at a gala awards ceremony, in its first edition, will be held at the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, on April 24, 2008.

"We decided to celebrate the World Photography Awards at the French Riviera because it was in a cafe in the area where we conceive the idea. We saw that there was a void in the market for image. Now we want to make these awards the Oscars of photography, "said the founder of the contest, Scott Gray, in a press conference in the British capital.

With an annual basis, the festival awarded "L'iris d'or" the author of the instant that represent the image of the year. The winner will get, as a prize, $ 25,000 and admission to the World Photography Academy, an academy founded recently to photograph the event which counts among its members and renowned photographer Phil Stern, Terry O'Neil and Sylvia Plachy.

According to Tom Stoddart, honorary member of the Academy since the beginning of the digital age "everybody has become a photographer, is now discovering the best talent." The awards will be accompanied by a statement that between 21 and 25 April, will exhibit 330 works in Cannes for the finalists.
